The short answer: remove the bead, then prepare the joint
For an ordinary tub, shower, or sink joint that is dry, firm, and fully accessible, remove the cured bead mechanically before resealing. Cutting away sealant and cleaning the film it leaves behind are separate steps: first lift the bead without gouging the fixture, then use only a residue-cleaning method allowed by both the surface maker and the new sealant label. DAP's Silicone Max directions call for old caulk to be cut or scraped away and for the receiving surface to be clean, dry, sound, and free of dirt and dust.
Stop before removal if this is not a surface-sealant problem
Do not pull the bead merely to investigate a concealed condition. Stop if the wallboard, backer, trim, or fixture edge is soft, swollen, loose, stained from an active leak, or moving. Also stop for sewage or flood contamination, a musty odor or growth extending behind finishes, extensive water damage, or a leak whose source is unknown.
EPA's roughly 10-square-foot mold figure is a general decision aid, not a guarantee that a smaller area is safe to handle. Refer extensive or hidden growth and extensive water damage. CDC says people with allergies, immune suppression, underlying lung disease, asthma, or COPD should not perform mold cleanup; keep them out of the work area and arrange qualified help.
Protect the finish and remove only what is loose
Photograph the joint and note whether it is a change-of-plane joint, a fixture perimeter, or a decorative gap. Protect the tub, tile, stone, or laminate from the tool edge. Score along the two bonded faces with a purpose-made caulk-removal tool or another tool permitted by the surface manufacturer, then pull short sections rather than prying against the finish.
Do not use aggressive abrasives, heat, or an improvised solvent to speed removal. Natural stone, acrylic fixtures, coated metal, grout, and plastics can respond differently. If the cured bead will not release without damaging a surface, pause and obtain product- and substrate-specific guidance.
Clean residue without creating a compatibility problem
After the bulk bead is gone, remove loose fragments and dust. Check the new sealant's current cartridge and technical data sheet for surface-preparation and solvent limits, and check the fixture or tile maker's cleaning instructions. A solvent named for cleaning one uncured sealant is not automatically approved for cured residue or for every substrate.
Never mix bleach with ammonia or any other cleaner. CDC specifically warns against mixing cleaners. Do not caulk over visible mold: correct the moisture problem and complete only an appropriate small-area cleanup before coating or sealing.
Dry and inspect the open joint before resealing
Let the joint become fully dry for the chosen product rather than sealing trapped water. CDC advises drying wet materials within 24–48 hours where possible, but that public-health target is not a universal caulk-ready time. The sealant label controls application readiness.
Use bright side lighting to check both bonding faces. If moisture reappears, the gap changes width, the backing is damaged, or staining continues, stop. A new surface bead cannot repair an active plumbing leak, failed waterproofing, or a deteriorated substrate.
Reseal only within the new product's listed use
Confirm the sealant lists the exact exposure and substrates, then follow its joint-size, masking, tooling, ventilation, cure, and water-ready instructions. DAP Silicone Max has product-specific tooling and tape-removal timing; those directions belong to that named formula and should not be transferred to another cartridge.
Record the brand, formula, lot if visible, application date, and label-specified return-to-service time. Keep the room and joint out of service for the longer current instruction if the cartridge and an older online sheet differ.
Verify the repair and know when to hand it off
After the full label interval, photograph the bead under similar lighting and inspect for missed adhesion, tearing, softness, or renewed moisture. Recheck after normal use without pressing or probing the seal. If the bead releases, discoloration returns quickly, or water appears from behind it, stop repeating surface repairs and give a qualified professional the photos, dates, product label, and moisture history.
