Use ventilation, drying, and measurements as one routine

Run the bathroom fan during bathing and continue afterward, dry persistent wet surfaces, and track relative humidity with a hygrometer. ENERGY STAR's low-cost guidance suggests ventilation during and for 15 minutes after showers or baths. Treat that as a practical starting point, then follow the fan manufacturer's instructions and use measurements to identify a bathroom that is not recovering.

Set a conservative humidity reference

EPA advises keeping indoor relative humidity below 60 percent and ideally 30–50 percent. CDC's asthma guidance recommends under 50 percent. These are indoor-moisture references, not a guarantee against mold and not a command to over-dry a house in every climate. Use the more conservative range when an occupant's health guidance calls for it, and address condensation even when a single reading appears acceptable.

Create a repeatable shower log

Place the hygrometer where it will not be splashed and follow its instructions. Record a baseline before bathing, a reading at the end, and readings at the same intervals afterward, such as 15, 30, and 60 minutes. The useful signal is the recovery pattern across several similar showers, not one exact number from one inexpensive sensor.

Also note mirror clearing, ceiling or wall condensation, towels or joints that stay wet, door/window position, and outdoor weather. Photos from the same position help reveal persistent staining.

Operate and maintain the fan within its instructions

Use the fan during the moisture-producing event. Follow the manufacturer instructions for accessible grille or filter cleaning; this guide does not cover electrical troubleshooting or dismantling equipment. ENERGY STAR fan criteria cover tested airflow, efficiency, sound, and installed performance, so fan noise alone is not proof that useful airflow reaches the intended exhaust.

If a fan does not appear to clear bathroom moisture or its discharge location is unknown, do not enter an attic, wall cavity, or other concealed or unsafe space to investigate; arrange a qualified ventilation inspection.

Reduce the water that must evaporate

After use, squeegee or wipe accessible wet surfaces if the finish maker allows it, spread towels to dry, and keep shower curtains or doors positioned for drying. Open a window only when weather, security, and outdoor humidity make it sensible. Fix ordinary visible leaks promptly; staining, soft wallboard, or water from behind finishes needs referral rather than a longer fan run.

Stop for unknown exhaust, hidden moisture, or health red flags

This guide does not cover fan electrical faults or internal repair; follow the product instructions and use qualified service when the fan cannot be operated normally. Refer persistent condensation, wet drywall, musty odor, suspected hidden growth, or exhaust entering a concealed space. CDC says people with asthma, COPD, immune suppression, underlying lung disease, or significant allergies should not perform mold cleanup.

Verify improvement without claiming a cure

Compare several before-and-after shower logs using similar conditions. Improvement means faster recovery and fewer persistently wet surfaces, not proof that a concealed cavity is dry. If the pattern does not improve after correct operation and safe surface drying, preserve the log, fan model, room photos, and any stain history for a ventilation or moisture professional.
