Recurring mold means the moisture cycle is still winning

Replacing a darkened bead can improve a surface, but it does not correct condensation, poor drying, an active leak, hidden damp material, or a loose joint. CDC says not to paint or caulk over mold; address the water problem, remove visible growth only when it is appropriate to do so, and dry the area. A mold- or mildew-resistant label does not remove those steps or promise a permanent result.

Use a four-branch recurrence check

Photograph the location and timing before cleaning. Do not assume the smallest visible branch is the only condition present.

  • Surface soil: discoloration is limited to the exposed bead and follows slow drying or residue buildup.
  • Failed bead: the sealant is loose, split, missing, or detached from one bonding face.
  • Room moisture: mirror, ceiling, or several surfaces stay wet after showers and humidity remains elevated.
  • Leak or hidden moisture: staining, swelling, softness, musty odor, or dampness returns from behind or outside the joint.

Check humidity and drying before replacing the bead

EPA recommends keeping indoor relative humidity below 60 percent and ideally 30–50 percent, using bathroom exhaust or an open window, and correcting condensation. CDC's asthma guidance uses a more conservative under-50-percent target. A low-cost hygrometer can show patterns, but one reading does not diagnose a wall cavity.

Log humidity before the shower, at the end, and at consistent intervals afterward. Dry wet surfaces and run ventilation according to its instructions. Persistent condensation despite normal operation is evidence to investigate, not a reason to seal more edges.

Inspect the bead and substrate without opening the wall

If the bead is separated, note exactly where adhesion failed and whether the joint moves. If the surrounding finish is firm and dry and no other red flag exists, a correctly prepared replacement may be within low-risk scope. If wallboard is stained or soft, the odor seems to come from behind the finish, or moisture reappears between uses, stop before cutting or pulling materials apart.

Apply the mold-cleanup boundary conservatively

EPA describes about 10 square feet as a general threshold used to separate many small cleanup situations from work that needs more rigorous guidance or experienced help. It is not a safety warranty. Refer hidden growth, extensive water damage, sewage or flood contamination, repeated rapid recurrence, or any area whose moisture source is uncontrolled.

CDC says people with allergies, immune suppression, underlying lung disease, asthma, or COPD should not do mold cleanup. Symptoms belong with a health professional; a visual surface check cannot establish air safety.

Replace caulk only after the cause is controlled

For an appropriate small surface condition, follow CDC cleaner and PPE guidance, never mix cleaners, and wait until the joint meets the new sealant's clean-and-dry requirements. Remove failed material rather than coating over it. Use a product listed for the exact substrate and exposure and observe its water-ready and full-cure times.

Verify the moisture routine, not just the bead

Keep before-and-after photos, humidity logs, cleaning and application dates, and the product label. Recheck at one week and after several normal shower cycles. If growth, odor, swelling, or adhesion failure returns soon after correct surface work, stop repeating the repair and provide the record to a qualified moisture or mold professional.
